Common causes of motorcycle accidents

by | May 4, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Riding a motorcycle may be a lot of fun, but it can also be very dangerous. Motorcycles don’t have as many ways to keep you safe as a regular car does, so there’s a high chance that getting into a motorcycle accident can leave you badly hurt or even be fatal. Here are a few common types of motorcycle accidents in Georgia.

Head-on collision

Head-on collisions are the most dangerous form of motorcycle accident. Having a head-on collision with an oncoming car can cause you to fly off of your motorcycle and collide with the car or end up on the pavement.

This can cause a multitude of injuries or be fatal depending on the severity of the crash. Over half of motorcycle accident deaths are caused by head-on collisions.

Wet roads

Riding a motorcycle on a wet road can also be very dangerous. If it has been raining or there was a water leak that causes the road to be slippery, you need to ensure that your bike has sturdy tires with proper traction. If your motorcycle’s tires do not have good traction, you can easily lose control of the motorcycle.

Road hazards

Hazardous roads are another huge cause of motorcycle accidents. Motorcycles are much more vulnerable to road hazards than a typical car so riding over a rough road that has many cracks and bumps can cause you to lose your balance and in turn lose control. A road with loose gravel or an uneven pavement can also be very dangerous to ride over as a motorcyclist.

High speed riding

Due to their small size and light weight, many motorcycles have the ability to reach incredibly fast speeds. If a motorcyclist is riding a sports motorcycle, they may be able to reach 150 mph or faster. When going this fast, if something causes you to lose control, it will almost certainly end in a very bad motor vehicle accident that will not only hurt you and can endanger the lives of everybody else on the road.

You can still have fun riding a motorcycle without putting your life in jeopardy. To avoid accidents, it is important to always be aware of your surroundings and to follow the speed limit at all times.
